Mowing & Tips - St. Augustine Grass
A recommended mowing height is 3’-4’ using sharp blades to ensure a clean cut
Avoid waiting to long between mows and change the bowing patterns from time to time to avoid traffic ruts in yard.
Mowing should reduce the height of the grass by no more than 1/3 to keep the grass healthy.
FOR NEW SOD:
Since New Sod needs time to establish roots, it is recommend that you don’t mow for about 6-8 weeks after new sod installed.
Getting Started
Choosing the right sod and knowing how to properly prepare the selected area for installation can make all the difference in the world when it comes to growing a great lawn.
1.) Test the soil
2.) Remove existing grass and debris
3.) Schedule the installation
4.) Water the area beforehand
5.) When laying sod, start by staggering pieces
6.) After installation, treat the lawn with care for the first full year
7.) Apply a pesticide and a fungicide within 48 hours of new grass is preferred. This is when the
grass is under the most stress and more susceptible to insect and fungus damage
8.) Water early in the morning, deeply and evenly
9.) Check on the moisture to ensure its not being over watered, dial down if heavy rains persist
Fertilization - See Florida Lawn Schedule
After about a month you can apply fertilizer to give your sod the nutrients it needs to survive and thrive.
Weed Control
When new sod is laid, weeds that have been in the soil waiting may start popping up due to the increased water and fertilization; so its good to have a plan of action to prevent and control what you can.
